As part of the Improve River Life Project, focus groups for the Vrljika and Jadro Rivers were held on 12 November 2024. The purpose was to bring together stakeholders and experts to discuss the main challenges and measures to protect these rivers.
Key challenges of the Vrljika River
The participants pointed out the problems of silting river channel and drainage canals, decreasing spring yields, and river pollution, in particular due to wastewater infiltration. Proposed measures included improved cooperation with Hrvatske vode, regular maintenance of the river channel, and informing the population about the importance of protecting the river. Hiring a fish warden was identified as one of the potential methods to protect the softmouth trout and the fish stock.
Key challenges of the Jadro River
The participants pointed out the presence of the invasive rainbow trout, the accumulation of sediment and micro-plastics, and irregular cleaning of settling tanks. They stressed the need to establish a self-sustainable ecosystem of the Jadro River, which includes the preservation of the softmouth trout, reduction of the impact of invasive species, and active engagement of the local community in the protection of the river. The possibility of developing tourist activities such as recreational fishing was also considered.
Further steps
The Improve River Life Project is aimed at the restoration of river ecosystems by detecting river barriers, strengthening cooperation with local stakeholders, and raising awareness about the importance of preserving rivers. The aim is to free 25,000 km of rivers in the European Union, with more than 500 barriers removed in 15 countries so far.
